Michael P. Lyons- President and CEO of Truist Financial Corporation

Michael P. Lyons is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Truist Financial Corporation, one of the largest commercial banks in the United States. He assumed the role on September 1, 2026, bringing more than three decades of experience across banking, financial technology, payments, and corporate strategy.

Before joining Truist, Lyons served as CEO of Fiserv, a global financial technology and payments company. He previously held senior leadership positions at The PNC Financial Services Group and Bank of America, where he worked on corporate strategy, business expansion, acquisitions, and financial services operations.

His appointment at Truist marks a return to traditional banking leadership after his time at Fiserv, combining experience in financial services with a background in technology-driven business transformation.

Academic Background and Early Career

Lyons earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He began his career in financial services, developing experience in investment banking, investment management, and corporate strategy.

Before joining Bank of America, he worked as a director in Morgan Stanley's financial institutions investment banking group. He later served as a principal at Maverick Capital, where he focused on investments in financial institutions.

These early roles gave him exposure to financial markets, institutional banking, mergers and acquisitions, and the strategic decisions that shape large financial organizations.

Building a Career at Bank of America

Lyons joined Bank of America in 2010, taking on senior responsibilities in corporate development and strategic planning. He subsequently served as the bank's global head of corporate development, strategic planning, investor relations, and private equity.

His work involved corporate strategy, investment decisions, and business development during a period when financial institutions were adapting to changing market conditions and evolving customer expectations.

The experience provided a foundation for his later leadership roles at PNC, where he would oversee major business operations and contribute to the bank's national expansion.

More Than 13 Years at PNC

Lyons joined The PNC Financial Services Group in October 2011 as head of Corporate and Institutional Banking. Over more than 13 years at the company, he held senior positions with increasing responsibility.

In February 2024, he was appointed President of PNC, overseeing the company's lines of business. His responsibilities included supporting the bank's business strategy, financial performance, payments capabilities, and national growth.

During his tenure, Lyons played a role in significant strategic transactions and expansion initiatives. PNC's major acquisitions included RBC Bank and BBVA USA, with the latter transaction expanding the bank's presence across the southern and western United States.

His experience at PNC gave him a broad understanding of consumer and commercial banking, institutional relationships, payments, and the operational demands of a large national financial institution.

Leading Fiserv Through a New Phase

In January 2025, Lyons joined Fiserv as President and CEO-elect. He officially became Chief Executive Officer on May 6, 2025, following Frank Bisignano's departure to lead the Social Security Administration. Lyons also joined Fiserv's Board of Directors.

Fiserv provides financial technology and payment solutions to banks, financial institutions, merchants, and businesses around the world. Its services include payment processing, merchant acquiring, digital banking, and financial technology infrastructure.

Lyons brought experience from both the banking and payments industries to the position. His background at PNC and Bank of America gave him an understanding of financial institutions as customers, while his earlier investment and corporate strategy experience informed his approach to business leadership.

He led Fiserv until June 2026, when he departed to take on the leadership role at Truist.

Becoming President and CEO of Truist

On June 15, 2026, Truist announced Lyons as its next President and Chief Executive Officer, with the appointment taking effect on September 1, 2026.

He succeeded Bill Rogers, who transitioned to Executive Chair as part of the company's planned leadership succession. Rogers is expected to remain in that position until his planned retirement in April 2027.

Lyons' appointment followed a career that included leadership across several major financial institutions. Truist highlighted his more than 30 years of experience and his track record in business growth, innovation, and financial services leadership.

In announcing his appointment, Lyons expressed his intention to build on Truist's existing foundation, strengthen its position with clients, and support the company's next phase of growth.

His priorities span the company's consumer and small business banking, commercial and corporate banking, investment banking, wealth management, payments, and specialized lending operations.

The move also brings Lyons back to Charlotte, where he previously held senior leadership responsibilities at Bank of America.

Leadership and Community Involvement

Throughout his career, Lyons has maintained involvement in organizations beyond the financial services industry.

He has served as a national trustee of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, supporting an organization focused on helping young people develop educational, social, and leadership skills.

His other board and community roles have included:

  • Early Warning Services: Served as chair of the board of the company behind Zelle and Paze.

  • University of Pittsburgh Medical Center: Served as a member of the board of directors.

  • Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy: Served as board chair.

These roles reflect his involvement in financial technology, healthcare, youth development, and community initiatives.
