Gavin Wood- The Blockchain Pioneer Leading Parity Technologies

Gavin Wood is a British computer scientist, blockchain entrepreneur, and the Chief Executive Officer of Parity Technologies. Best known as a co-founder of Ethereum and the founder of Polkadot, Wood has played a significant role in developing the technology and infrastructure behind the decentralized web.

He founded Parity Technologies in 2015 and helped establish the Web3 Foundation, working with both organizations to develop and launch Polkadot. After stepping away from the CEO position at Parity in 2022 to concentrate on technical development, Wood returned to lead the company in August 2025.

His work focuses on blockchain architecture, decentralized infrastructure, and creating technology that gives individuals greater control over their digital interactions and data.

Academic Background and Early Career

Wood developed an interest in computer science, economics, and game theory before entering the blockchain industry. He earned a master's degree and a PhD in computer science from the University of York in the United Kingdom. His doctoral research focused on music visualization.

Before becoming involved with Ethereum, he worked on several software and technology projects. His experience included consulting for Microsoft Research on embedded domain-specific languages, developing software systems for legal applications, and working on audio visualization tools.

This combination of academic research, software engineering, and practical product development helped shape his approach to building complex technology systems.

Co-Founding Ethereum

In 2013, Wood became involved with the Ethereum project after being introduced to its co-founder, Vitalik Buterin.

He made a significant technical contribution by developing the first functional Ethereum client in January 2014. He also authored the Ethereum Yellow Paper, which provided a formal technical specification for the protocol and became an important reference for developers implementing Ethereum.

Wood contributed to the design of several foundational components of Ethereum, including the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), gas mechanism, and account model. He also played a central role in the development of Solidity, the programming language widely used to write smart contracts on Ethereum.

He later served as the Ethereum Foundation's first Chief Technology Officer. After approximately two years with the foundation, he left to pursue new opportunities in blockchain infrastructure and decentralized technology.

Founding Parity Technologies

In 2015, Wood founded Parity Technologies, initially established as Ethcore, alongside other developers who had worked in the Ethereum ecosystem.

The company focuses on developing blockchain infrastructure, software, and tools that help developers build decentralized networks and applications. Its work has included blockchain clients, development frameworks, and core infrastructure for the Polkadot ecosystem.

Parity became one of the key technical organizations behind Polkadot, a blockchain network designed to allow different blockchains to communicate and operate together.

Wood initially served as CEO and Chief Architect. In October 2022, he stepped away from the CEO position to dedicate more time to technical research, architecture, and the development of Polkadot. Parity co-founder Björn Wagner took over the CEO role.

Creating Polkadot and the Web3 Ecosystem

One of Wood's most significant projects after Ethereum was Polkadot, a multi-chain network designed to connect independent blockchains and allow them to share information and functionality.

Wood proposed the project and helped develop its technical architecture through Parity Technologies and the Web3 Foundation. Polkadot officially launched in 2020, introducing an approach that allows specialized blockchain networks to operate within a shared ecosystem.

The Web3 Foundation was established to support the development of decentralized internet technologies and the broader Polkadot ecosystem.

Wood also created Kusama, an experimental network that serves as a testing environment for technologies and features associated with Polkadot.

His work helped popularize the concept of Web3, a vision of the internet built around decentralization, digital ownership, and greater user control. Wood is also credited with coining the term.

Returning as CEO of Parity Technologies

On August 13, 2025, Parity Technologies announced that Wood would return as CEO in late August, succeeding Björn Wagner.

Wood explained that he had stepped away from the position in 2022 to focus on protocol research and development. With much of the technical groundwork for Polkadot established, he decided to return to the CEO role to connect the company's long-term vision with day-to-day execution.

His return marked a new leadership phase for Parity, with an emphasis on accelerating development and making its technology more accessible to developers and users.

In an October 29, 2026 update, Wood outlined a more focused direction for the company. He explained that Parity would concentrate its resources on advancing Polkadot's underlying technology and the engineering capabilities developers need to build applications on the network. The update also announced proposed organizational changes to reduce the company's cost base.

These developments reflect Wood's approach to leadership: maintaining a strong technical foundation while adapting the organization to the needs of the next stage of blockchain adoption.

Leadership Philosophy and Vision

Wood's work is shaped by the belief that people should have greater control over their digital lives. He has consistently advocated for decentralized systems that reduce dependence on centralized platforms and give users more ownership of their online identities, data, and interactions.

His background as a software engineer and protocol architect influences his leadership style. Rather than approaching blockchain primarily as a financial product, he focuses on the underlying infrastructure, programming tools, and systems required to support decentralized applications.

At Parity, this vision translates into a focus on building reliable blockchain technology and improving the experience for developers creating products within the Polkadot ecosystem.
