Personal Experience Questions
1. Please explain your daily role at ECS Interiors, LLC.

As the principal and certified interior decorator Texas of ECS Interiors, my primary focus is creating timeless, custom interiors that reflect the styles and meet the functional needs of my clients.  I also keep up to date on the latest trends and my continuing education to ensure my skills support the fundamental goal of ECS Interiors which is to help clients realize their homes full potential.  In addition, I manage the behind the scenes financial and marketing efforts for the company.

2. How did you arrive at ECS Interiors, LLC?

Following a highly successful sales and marketing career with a Fortune 100 pharmaceutical company in both the South (Field) and on the East coast (Home Office/Headquarters), I had the opportunity to do what I always wanted – interior design.  I grew up in a family run construction business, working summers alongside my Dad and Granddad, on the job site, pouring concrete from high school and throughout college.  My mother taught me to sew.  I was forever rearranging furniture in the bedrooms of both myself and my sister and where ever else I could get away with it in our family’s home (and even my Grandparents and other family and friends).  With that history and the idea planted by friends and family, I left the corporate world, got my certifications, established my LLC in 2009, and never looked back when the opportunity presented itself.

3. What motivates you most to achieve business success?

I grew up in a family run business.  Your reputation is all you have.  Happy clients are return clients that also give referrals, which is not only a model for success but a win/win situation for all involved.  The best part of every project is seeing a client’s face light up or hearing the excitement in their voice when the end result is revealed.  That is success personally and professionally for the business and the client.

4. Is your blueprint for success based, in some way, on role models? If yes, can you name them?

Absolutely. My Dad and Grandfather worked hard and had wonderful reputations in the construction business that my Grandpa started in 1954. They both worked hard and were extremely well respected for their knowledge and integrity. By working alongside them and growing up watching how they did business I learned what it means to do the job right or don’t do it. Quality matters and should be top of mind no matter what your profession. They didn’t ask anything of anyone they didn’t expect of themselves. I always know I can rely on memories of my Dad and Grandfather any time I question decisions I need to make. There was also a very special woman from my childhood who was a highly successful entrepreneur in the oil business, named Ellen Brandom. She went on to become a very respected political figure in Missouri. I remain in touch with the family to this day. Sam and Janie Potashnick are owners of a lucrative transportation company for which I worked the year prior to entering the pharmaceutical industry and were also influential in my learning about growing and running a business. I babysat their children and pets for many years as well. These people were all very supportive throughout my youth and higher education and when I entered my professional career.

5. What is your source of inspiration?

I don’t have a single source of inspiration. Every project is different. I am inspired by my clients as a starting point. What are their needs and wants? I design to the clients’ style vs having a singular signature style of my own. It is ultimately their home and needs to reflect them. I’ve designed rooms around a sentimental piece of furniture, or chosen color schemes on a favorite antique rug, or custom lighting to achieve an old-world billiard room look and feel liked by a client. We are only limited by our imaginations when it comes to inspiration.

7. What differentiates your company from the competition?

The experience that I bring to the table whether it be growing up in the construction industry, my creative work with advertising agencies in my marketing days or even knowing how to sew enables me to understand various aspects of the design process and to work with my suppliers/trades at a different level than some designers.  For example, if you know how to sew it’s easier to design a custom window treatment that can actually be fabricated successfully.  If you know how to look for obstacles such as HVAC ducts/vents, electrical, plumbing you can watch for problems and ask questions of the trades you work with to prevent unforeseen problems and extra costs.  Hands on experiences are worth their weight in gold and mine are unique.  My attention to detail and ability to execute on a plan as well as being able to connect with people to understand their needs also enables me to bring my clients visions to reality.
